Reece told The Project on Friday night: ‘It was heartbreaking. Me and Jess were super close and we’re really great friends’.

He added: ‘One on one against her, like it is hard enough being in elimination let alone versing your best friend and it broke my heart a little bit.’

‘Jess, the things she can actually make is crazy. I’m gob smacked by that girl every day,’ he told the show’s panel of hosts.

In the lead up to his elimination, Reece admitted that the stress was getting to him and he was ready to leave.

‘When you get that close, the whole thing changes and it does become a lot harder mentally… it was more the stresses of being so close, and all that does overwhelm you. You’re just like, I really want to go home,’ he told PopSugar

It comes after the amateur cook opened up about struggling to balance his ambitions as an aspiring chef with a strained home life.

The talented cook confessed to TV Week that the stress of the competition put a strain on his relationship with partner of four years, Dean.

Reece said: ‘Leaving your partner for six months is hard – it was tough. Dean was at home looking after the bills by himself, and I’m out here not contributing’.

He added: ‘I felt guilty I wasn’t contributing to the relationship as much as I could’ the Newcastle foodie added.

‘I felt anxious and overwhelmed.’
