Amazon Prime monthly membership fees are increasing

Amazon Prime subscribers on the monthly plan are about to see a price hike.

The company announced on its help and customer service page that as of Friday, the cost of its monthly Prime subscription is rising from $10.99 per month to $12.99. Amazon Prime Student monthly members will also see an 18% hike, increasing their rates from $5.49 each month to $6.49.

Customers who pay a yearly rate of $99 and Prime Student members who shell out $49 a year will not be affected.

Existing members should expect to see the increase in price after February 18.

Prime benefits include free two-day shipping on all Prime eligible items and access to Prime Video, Channels and Music. For the online retailer, Prime has been an attractive option to convince customers of making the site their go-to for nearly anything imaginable.

The price change is just one day removed from Amazon’s announcement that the company is choosing between 20 cities to build its $5 billion second headquarters. Finalists include New York City, Washington D.C., Newark, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.
