It’s here! Liverpool vs Everton, live on the TV, nobody allowed in the stadium… during a never-ending lockdown. Do you remember pubs?
Thank the heavens the football has continued, even if there is a certain amount of fatigue setting in with the sheer number of games available to watch, with each one advertised as though the most important on earth. Games like this are exactly the type that never lose their buzz though the difference between watching remotely on screens rather than in the match-going crowd on its way to the stadium is a big reminder of the lame dimension we currently inhabit.
Jurgen Klopp has thanked fans for their support in Covid-19 times in today’s match programme:
“As a club – and as a community – we have always embraced the idea that through struggle can come joy… but critically you only achieve this through solidarity and togetherness.
“I have really sensed in the past weeks the love and support from the LFC family. Our players also. They know our supporters hurt with us, in the same way they celebrate with us. It makes this a special place, to be honest.
“So, our fans are not inside Anfield today. For a derby game it will be especially strange I think, no matter how much we are used to this ‘closed doors’ experience.
“But I want everyone who reads this to know we feel them with us and know they stand shoulder to shoulder with us, whatever the circumstance.
“We will never take it for granted.”
The lack of fans will obviously have an effect on how this game plays out but Carlo Ancelotti knows how to beat Klopp’s teams. He’s done it before.
Kick off is 5:30pm and you can enjoy live updates throughout on this page.
